Women Build 2019 to Provide an Accessible Home for a Mother and 9-Year-Old Daughter
For our 5th annual Women Build event, we will be building a home for Dawn, a single mom, Courtney, who is in college and the National Guard, and 9-year-old Myah, who has severe special needs. Dawn and Myah are currently living in a crowded house with many relatives which is not ADA-compliant and does not have sufficient space for Myah's wheelchair and therapy equipment. Myah was the United Way poster child in 2016. Read Myah's story.
Dawn is required to contribute 250 "sweat equity" hours to take the place of the down payment on her home, as part of her partnership with Habitat Waukesha, so she will be a frequent worker on the build site. "I'm so excited to be able to be a part of building my home," said Dawn. "I can't wait to be able to stand outside my home that I helped build and feel proud of what I have accomplished with the help of volunteers, friends and family."
Women Build will be held May 7 - 11 and 14 - 18, 2019 at the home site on Eales Avenue in Waukesha. Our corporate sponsors and mostly female volunteers will provide a hand up for a very deserving mother-daughter team, as we create an accessible home where Myah can thrive. We're even featuring a mother-daughter team day on May 11, just before Mother's Day.
